Arts Centre Melbourne presents

Sayonara: Android-Human Theatre

Produced by Seinendan Theatre Company and Ishiguro Laboratory
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see a compelling fusion of theatre and science from Japan’s Android-Human Theatre performed by human actors and an extremely life-like robot, the Geminoid F.

Sayonara is the result of a unique collaboration between one of Japan’s award-winning theatre directors Oriza Hirata in collaboration with robotics specialist Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, Osaka University and ATR Intelligent Robotics & Communications Laboratory.

Sayonara is an internationally acclaimed innovative short play that tells a story of a young girl facing terminal illness and her gentle caretaker android who reads poetry to her.

Sayonara asks challenging and provocative questions about the essence of life, death and what it means to be human. The interaction between actor and robot provides a compelling narrative and exudes a powerful philosophical tension that makes this an extraordinary theatrical event.

Be prepared to have any existing notion about the relationship between humans and robots turned on its head.

Following each performance, there will be an onstage Q&A session with Professor Ishiguro from Osaka University’s Robotics Laboratory and director, Oriza Hirata. The Q&A session will be moderated by Marita Cheng, Young Australian of the Year 2012 and founder of Robogals Global.

Sayonara is made possible through the generous support of the Kenneth Myer Asian Theatre Series Endowment Fund.

Sayonara will be performed in English and Japanese with surtitles
