A radical reimagining of Bizet’s heroine Carmen, through dance, music and the theatre of Flamenco.
Sevilian dancer and choreographer María Pagés creates an excitingly bold and multi-faceted blend of Carmen and the songs that inspired her. She reclaims and remakes the original story as a vibrant, contemporary ode to the essence of what it is to be a woman.
This is a visionary blending of dance, music, poetry and theatre while maintaining the primal emotion of Flamenco. An aesthetic and aural spectacle made up of an ensemble of dancers and five musicians playing live.
The music doesn’t solely rely on Bizet’s original Carmen score, incorporating the pieces that inspired Bizet as well as some adaptation of classical Flamenco music, with original compositions by Rubén Levaniegos, Sergio Menem and David Moñiz.
Through poetry, a singular and universal female voice is created with words by ten diverse women from unique cultures - including Margaret Atwood (Canada), Yosano Akiko (Japan), Marina Tsvetaeva (Russia), Margeurite Yourcenar (France) and Forough Farrokjzad (Iran).
Described as ‘unforgettably beautiful’ at the Edinburgh International Festival 2017.
