Escape Velocity is a creative project of films and live performances, made with trans and gender non-conforming young people in Melbourne in collaboration with Minus18. The films are an artistic response to some of the anxieties faced by young people in public space and will be presented in three phases over a year.
Join us for the premiere public screening of Phase 2 of the films which complement Escape Velocity Walks the City, St Martins’ performance collaboration with Rosana Cade, Ivor MacAskill and Laurie Brown.
In science escape velocity refers to the energy needed to overcome a powerful force of gravity. In this project, Escape Velocity is the call for society to build up a collective momentum and become allies to trans and gender non-conforming young people.
Watch the films, talk about them, and share them with others. We hope Escape Velocity inspires you to become an ally: to reflect, learn more, speak up, and to support individuals and organisations around Australia that champion trans or gender non-conforming communities.
Escape Velocity is funded by Creative Victoria’s Future Makers for Change initiative.
The screening of Phase 2 will also feature the three films of Phase 1. These narratives each portray a young person facing a challenge, then gathering their courage to speak up, make a choice, or act in a new way that affirms who they are in the world.
