Suspended in a stark, mesmerising world defined by light and its absence, I hunger for you pulses with the restless impulse to lose ourselves in ecstasy, ritual and desire, riding an edge of barely controlled abandon into the vibrating stillness of its aftermath.
Premiered at BAM’s Next Wave Festival 2018, I hunger for you plumbs the subterranean depths of the human body to bring into the light deeply internalised forces of faith, violence, life and compassion. Drawing on personal experience of Charismatic spirituality, choreographer Kimberly Bartosik explores our universal desire to connect: with each other, with something beyond, with something within ourselves.
A Bessie-award winner, 2019 Guggenheim Fellow in Choreography and former dancer for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Bartosik has in recent years been hailed as one of the most adventurous and exciting dancemakers working today. Working in close collaboration for a year with a cast of exquisite dancers, Bartosik and her collaborators here sought to locate where the desire for faith resides in the human form. What spilled forth with incredible force was a visceral manifestation that goes beyond words. This hunger knows no bounds.
This engagement is supported by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through USArtists International in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Howard Gilman Foundation and by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant.
