Indonesian-born, Tokyo-based dancer and choreographer Rianto is known for his work with leading international figures such as Akram Khan and Choy Ka Fai, but here brings to Melbourne a work of startling intimacy and impact.

Trained since childhood in classical and East Javanese folk dance, Rianto is one of the world's leading specialist in Lengger, a cross gender dance form from Banyumas. With Medium, Rianto traces the form back to the root term from which it derives: to be aware, or to remember.

A space between manhood and womanhood, between customs and religious principles, between conscious control and submission to trance, Lengger is both contradiction and reconciliation, a movement beyond binaries. Medium is Rianto's attempt to secure the survival of this form and a call to eschew strict dogma in favour of the layered diversity and embrace of mystery that is at the heart of Javanese tradition.

A series of studies into the relationships between his religious body, social body, political body and traditional body, Rianto’s virtuosic movement language is here combined with a powerful live vocal and percussion score by multi-instrumentalist virtuoso Cahwati, a transcendent force in contemporary music also from Banyumas.

Medium, by Rianto – Indonesia is an individually ticketed event.
