Hip hop culture has always been, and continues to be, a forum through which people can express opinions, raise issues, and have their voices heard.
In Australia, hip hop offers artists from diverse backgrounds with important conversations to start, a platform to promote hip hop’s core values of respect, inclusion and individuality.
In this workshop, students will be encouraged to think about issues that affect them and impact their lives. Working with N’fa Jones at The Channel, students will be led in crafting those ideas into lyrics and song form. Students will then have the opportunity to record their lyrics with a backing beat, experimenting with rhyme and flow.
This workshop will be led by N’fa Jones, one of the pioneers of Australian hip hop with a long list of credits, including a number of ARIA wins and nominations. N’fa now works with the House of Beige label and artist Remi, as well as establishing a new Afro Beat / Hip Hop outfit Cool Out Sun which was recently nominated in The Age Music Victoria Awards. Touring relentlessly, N’fa still finds time to deliver the Diploma of Music Industry (Hip Hop) course at Box Hill Institute.
The Australian Music Vault is a new exhibition at Arts Centre Melbourne that will celebrate the past, present and future of Australian contemporary music. Delving into the extensive Australian Performing Arts Collection, objects will be on display for schools and the general public that will inspire and engage, telling the stories of the Australian music industry and its fans.
