Dear Friends of Arts Centre Melbourne,
In March, we made the difficult decision to temporarily close Arts Centre Melbourne to ensure the safety of our team, audiences, artists and presenters. It was a decision that was totally counterintuitive to what we do and deeply upsetting; but it was the right thing to do as we collectively battle to curb the spread and impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on our community.
Every ounce of our being in our industry is to get the show up: our battle cry is “the show must go on”. But this extraordinary situation demanded an unprecedented response and our collective courage. Our initial closure period was to conclude on 13 April, but we’ve today made the decision to extend that to 30 June 2020.
As Victoria’s arts centre, we’d love nothing more than to reopen our doors and warmly welcome artists back to our stages and audiences to our venues soon. But our closure continues to be a necessary public health measure.
In the meantime, we’ll continue to bring to you archival recordings and digital experiences that help uplift and connect our communities, especially during the time when this is most needed. Until we are able to welcome you back to our venues, let us come to you to share in the wonder of the performing arts.
The closure period will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and we promise to keep you updated. For now, we encourage everyone to continue to follow the advice and directives of government health authorities. For the most up-to-date information and advice, visit coronavirus.vic.gov.au.
From our family to yours – stay safe and healthy.
