Give more children access to the performing arts.

Located in the middle of the city, yet totally surrounded by lush greenery, is a venue that has stood the test of time.

For 60 years, The Sidney Myer Music Bowl has hosted some of the world’s biggest acts. Everyone from Sir Paul McCartney, to The Seekers, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to Midnight Oil have performed on the iconic stage. Its stalls and surrounding grounds have welcomed thousands of music lovers, fans and families marking the beginning of Christmas at the annual Carols by Candlelight.

Needless to say, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl holds a special place in many hearts. None more so, than the structural engineer designers behind this iconic structure, Irwinconsult.

On a warm evening in late summer, Irwinconsult and around 300 of their guests stepped onto the stage of the Sidney Myer Music Bowl to celebrate their 65th anniversary and the 60th of this iconic landmark.

The Kings Domain forming a verdant backdrop for the occasion, a string quartet from Alto Productions setting the scene, many guests were able to experience the Sidney Myer Music Bowl as they’d never done before. Guest feedback included, “To be able to celebrate a significant milestone at the iconic Bowl was surely a highlight”.

Sampling canapes such as red pepper cannoli with Persian fetta and tuna nicoise with French beans and new potatoes, guests admired the Victorian Heritage-listed tensile structure. Rather than be preoccupied with a performance, or an audience, when guests entered the stage they were able to focus on the iconic venue itself. Pioneering a number of new engineering techniques during development, the venue still remains as fascinating as ever.

With many guests familiar with The Sidney Myer Music Bowl’s purpose as an entertainment amphitheatre, the Irwinconsult anniversary celebration allowed the events team at Arts Centre Melbourne to exhibit the multifaceted potential of the space. Between hosting international headlining acts, such as Kanye West, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl can transform into a unique setting for private events. With minimal intervention, the setting and structure alone leave an everlasting impression on guests. And when coupled with superb food, refined service and memorable entertainment, the end result is an event that goes well beyond the norm.

“This Melbourne landmark was truly was one of the coolest, prestigious and merely impressive spaces I’ve had the pleasure of organising an event at.” said Susan Muller, Communications/Marketing Manager at Irwinconsult.

It’s a formidable feat, really, for a venue to still be used and enjoyed, appreciated and admired sixty years on. Six years, let alone sixty, is an age in the events industry. Refurbishments, restyles and updates are constantly made to maintain a venue’s position as a desirable setting for events. Even without significant amendments, this iconic venue is immune to such terms as ‘outdated’ or ‘tired’. The Sidney Myer Music Bowl, with its perennial beautiful garden backdrop, is eternally stylish, and continually sought after.
