As we emerge from the challenges of 2020, Victorian Opera’s Season 2021 marks a year of rebirth and rediscovery. From classics and musicals to family shows and new Australian works, there’s something for everyone. Engage your imagination and enliven your spirit with the wonders of opera.
A magical fusion of larger-than-life puppetry and opera opens the Season in a charming and often hilarious retelling of The Sleeping Beauty by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi.
In 2021, Victorian Opera celebrates the world premiere of four new Australian operas: Parrwang Lifts the Sky (Deborah Cheetham AO), Echo and Narcissus (Kevin March), Cassandra (Simon Bruckard) and The Butterfly Lovers (Richard Mills AM).
Two of Australia’s most revered operas return with Richard Meale’s Voss, based on Patrick White’s famed novel, and Victorian Opera’s Green Room Award-winning hit Lorelei, a modern operatic cabaret starring siren divas Ali McGregor, Antoinette Halloran and Dimity Shepherd.
Get ready to rock with the Australian premiere of The Who’s Tommy, the five-time Tony Award winning musical which took Broadway and the West End by storm.
Pack your picnics and dive into a night of soul-stirring music with Georges Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
The next generation of talent takes centre stage in Franz Schubert’s The Friends of Salamanca and Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, presented in association with the Lisa Gasteen National Opera Program.
Be it live or online, Victorian Opera is here to inspire you.
