Arts for All Appeal

Finding Event Information

All our major venues are wheelchair accessible and have an Assistive Hearing Loops. These venues are Hamer Hall, the State Theatre, the Playhouse, Fairfax Studio and Sidney Myer Music Bowl. For other venues, please check the event pages for accessibility information.

We accept Companion Cards for all ticketed events. This allows the cardholder to book a free ticket for their companion. A Companion Card does not cover the cost of extra experiences such as meals or Meet & Greets.

You can find further accessibility information in two places on our event pages:

  • Dates and Times box: this coloured box is on the right of the page underneath the event photo. It lists the dates and times of performances offering Auslan Interpretation, Audio Description, Relaxed Performances etc. If provided by a presenter, the running time is at the bottom of this box.
  • The Notes section: this is underneath the main summary of the event. If provided by a presenter, this section has Age Suitability, Warnings, Conditions of Entry, further details about accessible performances, and access icons.

Booking Accessible Seats

Wheelchair Access

Accessible wheelchair spaces are available in all our venues. They can be selected during the online booking process.

Accessible theatre seats, for customers wishing to transfer out of a wheelchair into a theatre seat, are available in designated locations in the Fairfax Studio and Hamer Hall. We need a minimum of 24 hours’ notice if you wish to transfer out of a wheelchair into one of these locations. This allows our team to prepare a seating allocation that best meets your needs. Please contact us by calling 1300 182 183 to discuss availability the available of accessible theatre seats and to book.

Hamer Hall has a number of aisle seats in the Stalls that are easy to slide into because they have an arm can that swing out. These seats are marked in light blue on the Hamer Hall seating map. Please speak to our team for assistance on your arrival.

Please note: Our team is unable to assist with using toilet facilities or transferring visitors from wheelchairs to seats.

Low or no stairs

If you would like to book a seat with low or no stairs but do not require a wheelchair accessible space or an accessible theatre seat, please contact our team on 1300 182 183.

Many doors into our venues, and seats within them, cannot be reached without encountering stairs. To reach some locations requires several flights of stairs. Our seating maps do not show the number of stairs needed to reach a venue entry door but they do show the steps inside the venue.

The areas in each of our major venues that can be reached with no or minimal stairs are:

Companion Card

We accept Companion Cards for all ticketed events. A Companion Card allows the cardholder to book a free ticket for the companion who will assist them during their visit. Companion Card tickets do not cover additional items such as meals, VIP packages or Meet & Greets.

If you book with a Companion Card that we do not have on file, a member of our team will be in contact to get the card’s details. You will also need to have the card with you on the day of the event.

Auslan Interpreted

Auslan Interpretation is offered for select performances, and translates what is being said or sung into Auslan (Australia's Sign Language). To book seats near the interpreter, select 'Book tickets' on the event page and add the code AUSLAN into the promo code box. These seats are subject to availability.

Open Captioning

Open Captions are text displayed on a screen during the performance, enabling audiences to read what is being said. Caption text is prepared from the script of the performance by highly trained staff. Where open captioning is provided, it is visible from almost all seats in our venues. Please phone our contact centre on 1300 182 183 if you would like further information.

Assistive Hearing

Assistive Hearing is a free sound amplification system that utilises an FM signal. This system can be used in any seat in our main venues and is accessed using headphones or a neck-loop that can be used with a hearing aid. These devices are available, on request, from the venue ushers. You will be asked to leave a drivers licence, or similar identity card, for the duration of the loan.

Audio Description

Audio Description (AD) is a narration that provides detailed information and descriptions of the visual elements of a performance. AD is available on select performances and can be booked online or over the phone. If you would like to use the AD available on specific performances, add a headset to your online booking or request one during a phone booking.

Tactile Tours

Tactile Tours allow audiences to feel key elements of a performance such as props, the set, and costumes. Tactile Tours are offered on select performances and run prior to the event to enhance the experience. See the event page for information on how to book.

Relaxed Performances

Relaxed Performances (RP) are for anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed environment. We focus on adapting the environment and performance, as well as preparing the audience by developing pre-show resources. You can book into an RP online or over the phone.

If you book an RP, you will be emailed with further information and a link to a Visual Story (when available) several days before your event.
