Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents presents

MSO Plays Shostakovich 5

Visionary conductor Jakub Hrůša returns to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

After continued acclaim across the world for his "quite astonishing conducting" (BBC Music Magazine) and "unforced yet energetic readings" (The Age), Jakub Hrůša is joined in this concert by the inspired Russian-British violinist Alina Ibragimova for one of the great 20th century violin concertos.

Originating out of troubled times, Bartók’s Violin Concerto No.2 employs lusciously mysterious and brooding folk elements.

Alina Ibragimova’s recent performances have been praised for their "terrifying rawness and electrifying energy" (The Guardian) and with a reputation as one of the most accomplished and intriguing violinists of her generation, this will be a performance not to miss. Shostakovich’s acclaimed Symphony No. 5 concludes the program.

"Each of his previous visits has reinforced his (Jakub Hrůša’s) reputation for unforced yet energetic readings that persuade you by their breadth of vision and his ability to stretch the MSO musicians into achieving a refreshing crispness of ensemble." – The Age

"Ibragimova is the real deal, pared back to her sternest essence, she proves a compelling narrator… conjuring pathos and dignity with quiet authority." – The Arts Desk
