Learn about contemporary First Nations lived experiences through engaging drama activities
The MARGUK Workshop Series uses drama to engage students in First Nations culture, histories and storytelling. Workshops are available for all ages, from Foundation to VCE and are delivered by leading First Nations theatre artists from ILBIJERRI, Australia’s longest running First Nations theatre company.
The workshops provide a valuable opportunity for students to learn from First Nations facilitators through interactive drama activities that allow students to develop a deeper understanding of First Nations culture, social and political history and the contemporary lived experience of Australian First Peoples.
Aligning to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority across a range of subjects and learning outcomes, the MARGUK Workshop Series is suitable for all students and uses participatory drama techniques to create a hands-on learning environment.
In 2017 MARGUK toured to 16 schools in Victoria, delivering workshops to 1,438 students.

Kamarra Bell-Wykes, Creative Director ILBIJERRI Theatre Company
Kamarra Bell-Wykes is a descendent of the Yagera and Butchulla people of South-East Queensland. In 2012 Kamarra graduated from the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education with a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning and was awarded an honour in Recognising and Responding to Diversity in the Classroom. Kamarra then worked as a teacher and youth worker in a number of communities in the Northern Territory. In 2014 she joined ILBIJERRI Theatre Company in the role of Education and Learning Manager, under which she developed the MARGUK Education and Learning program from the ground up, delivering innovative educational opportunities to schools, First Nations communities and the arts sector through drama and theatre.
For the last 20 years Kamarra has worked as a playwright, devisor, director and dramaturg, on works including ILBIJERRI’s award winning health-education shows; CHOPPED LIVER, BODY ARMOUR, NORTH WEST OF NOWHERE and VIRAL. Combined these plays have toured over 15 years and have been seen by more than 50 000 people across Australia in schools, prisons and community audiences. Kamarra was recently appointed to the role of ILBIJERRI’s Creative Director, in which she directs, dramaturges, writes and continues to oversee the MARGUK Education and Learning Program.

Established in 1990 ILBIJERRI is the longest running First Nations theatre company in Australia.
