Arts Centre Melbourne is committed to ensuring our venues and performances are welcoming and accessible for everyone. Listed below are the access icons and descriptors we use on our event pages so you can identify accessible events at a glance.

Check out our upcoming accessible events here.

Assistive Hearing

A hearing system is available in all Arts Centre Melbourne venues, except the Pavilion. This sound amplification system utilises an FM signal, providing coverage to all seats in the venues via headphones or neck-loops available from the venue ushers. This system can also be used for guided tours and small meetings in our buildings.

Audio Description

Audio Description (AD) enhance the live performance experience for people who are blind or have low vision by providing additional narration that complements the work. Vision Australia offers a free audio description service for selected performances.

Tactile Tours

Tactile Tours enhance the live performance experience for people who are blind or have low vision. It gives you a chance to feel key elements of a performance like the props, set and costumes prior to the show starting. Vision Australia offers free tactile tours for selected performances.

Auslan Interpreted

Auslan Interpretation is suitable for people who are deaf and communicate using Australian Sign Language (Auslan). Auslan Interpreters are available for select performances. To book seats near the interpreter, select ‘Book tickets’ and add the code AUSLAN in the promo code box.

Braille

Braille is used in the lifts, as well as other areas of Arts Centre Melbourne for our audiences who are blind or have low vision.

Highly Visual

Some performances are highly visual, with little or no spoken word, and therefore suitable for people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speak a language other than English.

Open Captioning

Captioning is available at selected performances. Captions are prepared from the script of the play by highly trained staff. During the performance, the captions are displayed on a screen, enabling the audience to read what is being said, without obstructing the performance.

Relaxed Performance

Relaxed Performances are for anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed environment – this can include but is not limited to people with autism, sensory sensitivities, learning disabilities, dementia as well as those living with anxiety or who have experienced trauma.

We focus on relaxing - or adapting - the theatre environment and preparing the audience by developing pre-show resources. During these performances, there is a relaxed attitude to noise, doors remain open and lights while dimmed remain on throughout the performance. You can leave the auditorium to take a break and a designated quiet area is available. Pre-show resources such as a Visual Story are available to help you prepare for your visit.
